What Good Is It

What Good Is It

What good is it if I gain the WHOLE WORLD

If I gain it all

And lose my SOUL

What good is it if at last I find my purpose on earth

But lose my soul

What good is it if fear suddenly stops hounding me

But I lose my soul

What good is it if good health prevails

If the beauty of life abounds

But I lose my soul

What if I find a place, a place to belong

But I lose my soul

What good is it to feel lovely after a lifetime of not

If I’ve forgotten about my soul

What good is it to have nothing to repair or

Nothing to pay or nothing to owe

But I lose my soul, oh my soul

What good is it to recover from sorrow and despair

If I lose my soul

What if I affect great change

And gain the ears of the mighty

What if I’m vindicated, celebrated

What good is it if I lift up my voice and sing

And the whole world hears and applauds

If my soul is nowhere to be found

My soul, my soul

What if all happiness to be found is waiting at my door

And I abide in safety the rest of my days

And my hands are full of good things

And I lose my soul, my soul, oh my soul

What if every one of my dreams comes true

And I forget and lose my soul

What good is it to live a good life, noble and cheered

But I let the whole world crowd out my God

Not holding Him most dear

What good is it if I gain the WHOLE WORLD

But I lose my SOUL

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

Matthew 13:44-46

  1. I have read this over and over again. Beautifully passionate and thoughtful. I will print it out to help me focus on what’s really important. Thank you, Debi.

  2. I so wish I could put that in a place in my mind that I will recall this before complaining.

I would love to hear from you.
