Good posture is ultimately about position – the position of head, shoulders, back, feet, etc.
Physical posture aside, what about our position within society’s many arenas? The obsession to gain esteem can easily become the supreme goal.
The Bible tells us that Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords, did not come to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28). His posture was that of a servant, to humbly obey the Father. He could have had all the earthly glory if He’d insisted on it, but instead He laid down His life for us.
God isn’t impressed with anything we have or anything we can do. Everything we have is His anyway. What a relief to know that we don’t have to do anything to change His thoughts toward us. We don’t have to position ourselves to gain His love. His love is faithful because of who He is, not because of anything we’ve earned. Without Him we have nothing, so why do we strive for position, placement, comfort when our posture should be that of a humble servant who lives for God’s glory? We need only follow Him and take His rest upon us.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn for me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Our value is inherent because of the One who gave us life. Instead of vying for position in this world, may our supreme goal be to take up our cross and follow Him.
