Autumn’s Reflection

Autumn's Reflection

There is a depth to autumn. Many people I know say that fall is their favorite time of the year. I think they would agree that there is also a feeling of reflection that accompanies this season. Autumn’s Reflection.

Autumn has always been my favorite time of year. It feels like a salve to my busyness. It carries an enchantment with its beauty that provides extra space to focus on God’s presence all around us.

I love the cold morning walks with my dog where our breath exits our mouths in billows not unlike the chimney smoke pouring from the roofs of the old houses we pass.

The colors and character of the leaves that hang on to their temporary hosts should all have the adjective ‘warm’ in front of their description. But I would add to that words like dazzling, dancing, light-on-their-feet, entertaining, boastful, glorious, comforting, nostalgic and sometimes melancholic.

Autumn creates a space for quietness. After the summer closes for the year, the days become darker and colder and we are forced to take shelter again, to reposition and adjust to prepare for the winter that is close behind.

Somehow autumn is intense in its gentle subtleties. It beckons powerfully into contemplation of things that matter.

I hope these autumn days and nights bring comfort and peace to you. If it feels like you’ve been holding your breath, waiting for time to slow down a little bit, may each day be stretched to provide a rest for your soul.
