But there’s far more to life for us. We’re citizens of high heaven! We’re waiting the arrival of the Savior, the Master, Jesus Christ, who will transform our earthly bodies into glorious bodies like his own. He’ll make us beautiful and whole with the same powerful skill by which he is putting everything as it should be, under and around him. Philippians 3:20, 21 The Message
There is a phrase in a song I heard recently and the hope and truth in this one line has remained in my thoughts. You probably already guessed what the lyrics are, having been given away by the title of this post. All these things will fall. (Song: “It Is Finished” by Gateway) The trials that tower over us like merciless enemies to our joy and peace and hope will not be left standing when all is said and done. There will come a time when they won’t even exist. Difficult as it is to imagine, they are temporary.
There are times when life gets overwhelming and sometimes, deeply painful. So many things can bring us down. Maybe there are daunting things that need to be tended to or problems that need to be resolved; things that take their toll, but not necessarily on our souls. Then, there are those things that bear enormous weight, leaving brokenness in our hearts. During these times discouragement, fear, and despair can reign in our thoughts and burden our souls.
We will all walk through dark valleys, but we are tremendously helped to remember that God is in control. He knows all things, sees every detail from past to present to the end of this age and beyond, and He is mighty in power. We can be certain that He is working in our lives. We are better to look to Him for the final word in every situation. What does He have to say about it? That’s the question He wants us to ask. As impossible as it may seem to have peace in the midst of a desperate state, the glorious reality is that the things of this world are temporary. When we can freeze-frame a glimpse of a God-given perspective we are able to be set free from despair. Jesus says in John 10:28, “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” God has never given up or changed His mind about the future of those that are saved through faith in Jesus. He has good, good, unfathomable and good things in store for us.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Let us pray fervently for each other, and bear our burdens together. We are not alone! We are brothers and sisters in Christ. Let’s cling together and hold tight to Jesus in joyful anticipation of God’s eternal plan. Let’s pray for and reach out to those who have not yet received this hope or realized this promise of eternal life; that souls would be saved, new life given. Let us encourage each other with real and lasting hope, trusting God to give us strength and grace aplenty for each new day that we are blessed to be alive on this earth. Whether it’s the daunting things that are piling up and making us weary or the losses and trials that make it hard to breathe or ever believe the world will feel right side up again, may we find hope knowing that He is in control of ALL things and that this is not the end of the story.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all. Psalm 34:19
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4
